Heat Safety Precautions for Dogs

Summer has finally hit the PNW! Over 80F can be uncomfortable for a lot of our dogs. Read below for tips to beat the heat.

🦮 Walk in the mornings before the heat of the day. Before 11am. Skill or trick training during this time too will keep your pup’s progress up. Later in the day, you may get 1-2 skills/tricks but not the volume you’re used to. That’s okay.

🧊 Ice cubes and frozen treats will help cool from the inside. Frozen lick mats are a great settling tool.

🐾 Check those paws and chest for how much heat is coming off your pup. A damp Bandana will help cool your pup down faster. A cooling mat as well (if you don’t have a backyard or pool.)

For potty: walk on grass as the soil doesn’t retain as much heat as sidewalks and roads, then go back inside.

For our bulldogs and squish face gang, your dog can be outside in > 80F for less than 10 mins. Heat stroke will take them over faster than other dogs. The snout + panting is apart of what helps cool dogs down.

For my training clients, sessions will be in the mornings or evenings. Saturday will open up to help space us out around the heat.
